Road Construction and Closures.
Road Construction and Closures.
Temporary Closures • Fontana Dam access road will be closed October 1st through January 31, 2010. Pedestrian access will be allowed. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) will have signs posted. • Cades Cove Loop Road - the west end of the loop road will be closed on Dec. 10 for hemlock woolly adelgid spraying. Visitors will have to exit the loop road at Hyatt Lane. • Cades Cove Loop Road is scheduled to be closed to all public use from March 1-May 21, 2010 for repaving. Weather conditions may affect these closure dates. • Clingmans Dome Road is scheduled to be closed to all public use from February through May 2010 for repaving. The road closes for the winter on November 30, 2009 and will not reopen until completion of the repaving project. • Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is scheduled to be closed from December 2009 until June 2010 for repaving. Specific closure dates will be posted here once they become available. • The parking area at the Sinks on Little River Road is tentatively scheduled to be closed from November 2009 through May 2010 for redesign and repaving. Road Construction • US-441 (Newfound Gap Road) repaving between Collins Creek Picnic Area south to the boundary with Cherokee, NC is scheduled for March 2009 through September 2010. • Foothills Parkway West (Walland area): recreational users of the unopened portion of this road are advised that they may encounter construction vehicles on the road on weekdays from Nov 12 - Dec 22, 2009. DUE TO A ROCK SLIDE, I-40 IS CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS BETWEEN EXIT 20 (U.S. 276), 24 MILES WEST OF ASHEVILLE, IN NORTH CAROLINA AND EXIT 421 ( I-81 INTERCHANGE), EAST OF KNOXVILLE IN TENNESSEE Travelers can still reach Western North Carolina. Both directions of I-40 are closed between Exit 20, West of Asheville in North Carolina, and Exit 421 (I-81 Interchange) East of Knoxville in Tennessee due to a rock slide at mile marker 2.6 on I-40 in North Carolina. The road is not expected to reopen for several months.
